Web Designing
– Some “Dos” of the art
Web designing has come a long way in the past couple of years. Gone were the days when you visited a site, all you find were some static pages and some images. Today what we see are Blogs, forums and other very dynamic sites. Website designing has undergone a dramatic makeover ever since the open source language PHP has come into the scene. Here we will take a look at some of the “Dos” of the wonderful art of web designing as it stands today. it is worth mentioning at this point that the web designing field is ever- changing one and what is standard today will be gone tomorrow and something new will come to takes it place.
"Good Design Is Must"
How many times have you come across a site which is ugly and have made you immediately leave the site, never to come back again? “First impression is the best impression”. This is a fact in the case of web designing. The first time a visitor comes to a site, the impression that he forms will stick. So try to make the site you have as good looking as possible. Consider your site like an office. Would you do business with a company whose office is not neat, well maintained and presentable? Same is the case with the website.
Design you make should be aesthetic and appealing. It should fit with the overall scheme of things. Many a time I have been asked to design a corporate looking site or web 2.0ish site. Your site design should represent what the site stands for. If your site is meant for kids, then the design should be something which attracts kids – colorful and fun.
Another aspect to remember is the audience. Each and every site has a particular target in mind and the design should appeal to that audience. For example, if the site is pregnancy related site, the people visiting the site most probably accept baby colors like pink and blue. But at the same time a car site won’t be expected to have the same colors. So the designer should keep that in mind while designing.
tise.
"Content Is King"
Take any topic and you may find hundreds of sites at present catering to that topic. Just do a Google search for any topic of interest and you will see what I mean. There is hardly any topic where a site has not already been built on. Whether the site is corporate site or a site based on your hobbies, a forum or a Blog, the main thing is content. With the numerous sites out there, if visitor comes to your site it will be because your site is different and provides the visitor with unique content.
Content is the most important part of a site. Whether your site is meant for just advertisements or just a particular topic, content is necessary. Content is needed not only for the every popular SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but also for the person visiting the site. If you have good content, the chances are you will get regular visitors.
Another point to consider is updating of site. The more frequently the site is updated the more regular the visitors to the site will be and better known the site will become. Regular updating of site is a good part of SEO strategy for a site as well.
"Judicious Use of Ads/Links"
The recent trend is the use of advertisements in a site to earn revenue. While this is a good strategy to earn money and there are several sites where you can apply for this to earn money for clicks, overdoing will be a put off to your site visitors. The better the ads blend with a site, the less of an intrusion it will be to the visitor.
Another factor that should be kept in mind is the number of ads that we place. How many sites have we visited where ads pop up one after the other crowding the site and our screen? It can be a real damper.
So the judicious placement of ads is a must.
"Eye to the future"
Web technology is changing on a regular basis. One should always bear in mind that technologies will change and you may get the responsibility to upgrade the site to the new technology.
The easiest example is that of a 100 – 200 page static site which is to be converted to a CMS (Content Management System) based system.
Another thing to be remembered is that you may not be the one handling the site. You may have sold the site to someone else, moved on to greener pastures and so on. Would you like to end up with site where you don’t know what is going and how to start, how this is done etc. So while developing a site, always develop keeping in mind that it should be easy to understand, add to and change.
This is just a part of the recent trends. As and when time passes, I will add on this article.
