First of all let me tell you, that making a site successful is not at all an easy task. It is a back breaking business and you should be ready to fight it out. In this article, I will mention some techniques that I have used to get my site going. These are just beginner’s tips but if used wisely, these can be used very successfully.

Good Content

You must have heard this number of times. Content is a must for a site. The site maybe an image site, joke site. Whatever the site maybe, if you don’t have the necessary content, your site will find it difficult to pick up. So do heavy research and see what all content needs to be put in the site and what can be shelved. Visiting similar sites, and looking at what people look for will get you a good idea as to what should and what should not be there in the site.

Daily Updation

Now that there is content in the site, make sure you update it. This is important so that your site does not end up with old new and information; it is also an initiative for visitors to come back to your site in a regular basis. If suppose you have a forum, you should post more and more, give initiative to new members to join and post. Nobody likes to visit sites where there are no new posts and now new contents for days together.

Freebies

This is a technique used successfully by many site. Free game downloads, free templates, free image downloads, free articles all these can be used to bring in more visitors. It is important to remember that these freebies not only attract new visitors but also are an incentive for old visitors to keep coming and to inform others of your site.

Probono Work

You may say “Do work for free, you must be kidding”. But this is one of the best ways to get your foothold into a market/ niche. Here are 2 examples you will see.

A person starts a new web directory. He asks anyone and everyone to add their links. Hundreds and hundreds of sites are added since it is free. After some months, PR (Page Rank) of the site goes and then the owner will ask future people to pay to add to the site.

A new designer joins the forum; he says he will design for free for the first 10 customers. Once he does that and gets a good opinion of his work in the forum, he will then charge for his work. The chances are he will get more work this way than he would have if he had asked for money for his work without getting his foothold in.

Visiting cards , notices etc

Many people say it is a waste but putting in your site address in your very own Visiting Card, notice, posters, Fly outs etc will attract visitors to some degree. Not a sure cut method and may not get any response for some sites.

Forums

Become a regular part of a forum. Advertising, helping people out in the forum, becoming an active member are always a good way to attract people to your site. Also you can use your signature to advertise your site along with making regular posts.
Articles And Blogs

Submitting articles to sites and blog posts are very new yet successful methods to get traffics to site. Some blog posts may require payment but there are some blogs allow you to do for free.

You may ask 10 people to please come to your site 100 times but it may have no effect. Adwords and such programs

Google has started a service called Google Adwords where site owners can buy ad space for specific keywords. You will get featured link for those keywords. Since Google is one of the most frequently used search engine, this is one service which can be used successfully. Mind you your success will depend on the adword campaign you decide on
